Send your love to the rescue and change the world by helping kids defy the odds.
Taylor Marie was born like most other babies: a full term, healthy little girl weighing in at 7lbs 7 oz. The only thing that made her birth out of the ordinary, Taylor was born with one hand. Around 6 weeks gestation, Taylor developed a blood clot in her arm which prohibited it from growing completely. Her left arm ends just below her elbow. Since her birth, she has been a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children, where she receives prosthetics and participates in upper extremity clinics.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing specialty pediatric care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for admission and receive all care in a family-centered environment with no financial obligation to the patient or their families. Shriners Hospitals relies on the generosity of donors to deliver this mission every day.
Taylor received her first arm prosthesis at around 3 months of age and instantly fell in love. She has always been able to do everything she wants or needs with just her available hand, but as most of us know some tasks are easier with two. She has always been a devout wearer and user of her prosthetics and will show any who see her that they are a useful tool and not an "unnecessary cosmetic" as some believe. She is now 4 years old and is in her 5th prosthetic arm, which she proudly displays, featuring Dora the Explorer and Boots the monkey, as well as Shriners' Anchor Technology.
In the spring of 2009 there was a lot of talk and fear looming about having to close Springfield and 5 other Shriners Hospitals because of funding issues. That was not an option as far as we were concerned. My friends and I decided to hold a walk-a-thon on behalf of the Springfield Shriners Hospital. It was a success and because of the support all the Shrine Hospitals received during this scare, none of the “slated 6” closed their doors.
I have continued to host this event each June to aid Shriners Hospitals for Children’s Springfield facility by gaining awareness and support.
Between June 2009 and July 2012 we have helped raise almost $8,000 and over 4 million can tabs (TABS FOR TAYLOR) for Shriners Hospitals. Each year our group grows larger and larger. And everyone is there for the same reason: we want to give back and help this wonderful hospital continue operation and care for its patients.
The 5th SHrINE ON SPRINGFIELD walk for Shriners Hospitals for Children ~Springfield MA facility, will be held on Saturday June 8, 2013 on the Toonerville Trail ( trailhead at PCM Image-tech, 280 Clinton St Springfield, VT) Registration is at 9:30 and the walk starts at 10.
