About the First Lady's Program

Every characteristic, every trait and every feature of the human body is written in the DNA blueprint through the genetic code.  Cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, polycystic kidney disease, sickle-cell disease, retinoblastoma, cleft lip and palate - these are just a few of many genetic diseases and disorders that may occur when defects are hard-coded in the genes.  While it isn't possible to stop the defects before giving birth to a child, we can work to discover new information and gain new insights into the treatment and therapies for genetic diseases and disorders.

This is the mission of First Lady Jan Madsen's 2012-2013 fundraising program, "The Miracle of a Single Seed."  This fundraising effort will provide needed research opportunities that can develop the seed of an idea into medical miracles that will greatly impact the lives of children affected by genetic diseases.

As one of the cornerstones of Shriners Hospitals for Children®, in-house research has far-reaching influence on the medical care that patients around the world receive.  Discoveries from internationally-renowned experts and research teams have already changed treatment options for many genetic diseases and disorders.  Whether it's being discovered or evaluated and tested at Shriners, the research function of the hospital is a critical component of its success and the hospital's mission to impact others' lives.

First Lady Jan is personally aware of the daily challenges of living with rheumatoid arthritis, a genetic disease.  Noting that she would not be able to serve in her role as First Lady were it not for present day medications, she is grateful for the advancements in treatments and therapies made possible through research.

"There's a saying, 'If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change,'" explains First Lady Jan.  "Each of us as individuals or our family members have benefitted greatly from medical advancements and changes made possible through research.  So while we may not understand why or how diseases occur, we can develop the treatment meithodologies and therapies that will dramatically improve the lives of countless children affected by debilitating conditions.  To plant a seed that will change a life?  That is a miracle."
